We have been notified that residents of Alabama continue to be targets of a new phone scam. Automated systems are dialing residents and asking for credit and debit card information. The automated system claims to be from a credit union and states the card has expired. Recipients of the calls have been asked to dial a long distance number to reactivate the card and the bogus "security center" would ask for the card number, PIN, and the expiration date on the card. Thousands of residents across the nation have been receiving these types of calls and also receiving emails and/or voicemails. Please be aware that fraudsters are now using "Text messaging" as well to fraudulently obtain personal and credit/debit card information. Anyone who has provided their personal information to the fraudsters should call Julie Smith at 800-448-4096 x1722 or email @ JMSmith@aacfcu.com so that we may protect their account. We further advise victims to go immediately to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) website at www.ftc.gov/idtheft and follow the steps provided to minimize their losses and protect their credit.
MasterCard Phone Scam
We have recently learned that a credit card phone scam is targeting Army Aviation Center Federal Credit Union members. This fraudulent automated call states that they are from the Security Department and needs your account information because your credit card has been cancelled. It also asks you to dial a 1-515 number and then enter your credit card number, expiration date and pin. We ask that our members avoid responding to ANY unsolicited requests for personal information. AACFCU will NOT contact you via an automated call nor would we request your personal information in this manner. If you have responded to such a call and compromised your account information please contact Julie S. at 800-448-4096 ext. 1722 or Cara G. ext. 1285 immediately.
Phishing e-mails
Phishing is a computer-related scam that uses e-mail or pop-up messages to deceive you into revealing your credit card numbers, credit union account information, Social Security number, passwords or other personal information. The e-mail message may claim to be from a business or organization you deal with such as your Internet service provider (ISP), credit union, federal agency or state agency. These messages usually take an urgent tone asking you to “update” or “validate” your account information immediately or face consequences. If you click the link included in the email, you may be taken to a Web site that looks like an organization you are familiar with, but is in fact a fake.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has recommendations for avoiding being taken in by a Phishing scam. Among them:
- DO NOT reply or click links included in e-mail requesting personal or financial information. Legitimate organizations don't ask for sensitive information via e-mail.
- DO NOT e-mail personal or financial information. Unlike secured Web connections such as CU@Home Online Account Access, e-mail is not a secure method of transmitting personal information.
- If you are concerned about your account, contact the organization by phone or by typing a Web address (URL) you know to be genuine into your browser. The only Web address for Army Aviation Center Federal Credit Union is www.aacfcu.com.
- Review financial account statements as soon as possible to determine whether there are unauthorized charges.
Please report any suspicious activity to AACFCU immediately at 800-448-4096.
